Artist: Ilana Nimz ʻāweoweo is the Hawaiian name for both the fish (Priacanthus meeki) and the plant (Chenopodium oahuense) both of which are endemic to the Hawaiian archipelago. The Hawaiian concept of duality, as expressed in creation chant called the Kumulipo, was the foundation for understanding the natural environment. The Hawaiian name refers to the intense red color of the fish body and the plant stems and seeds. The plant is found in coastal regions, and has a fishy odor when leaves are crushed. The fish is nocturnal and often found in caves and under ledges. The artwork is gouache painting on canvas with pressed leaves from the ʻāweoweo plant.
Artist: Madeline Shaklee This is a Lava lizard endemic to the Galapagos islands. It is a common lizard to find in the Galapagos, but that is the only place you will find them. They have a dramatic red head which was one of my favorite parts to paint. I modled this artwork off of the famous works by the naturalist Audubon, the subject is centered on the page and I tried to use a similar flat shading technique.
